The paper examines the written sources of medieval synods in the Kingdom of Hungary,
with a special focus on the late-medieval synod book of its most significant diocese, Esztergom.
The synod statutes of the Esztergom diocese are known in several versions or redactions,
from 1382 to 1450. The paper aims to explore the sources of the statutes, placing the
synod book and its origins in a wider European context. One of the key findings of this
article identifies the source of some of the Hungarian statutes. It was the synod book of the
diocese of Mende from (1292/93), composed by the renowned canonist Guillaume Durand.
This text was adopted not only by the diocese of Esztergom, but also by the dioceses
of Novara (1298), Bologna (1310), Pavia (1338) and Kraków (1320). The statutes of
Esztergom were in use for 200 years and served as the basis of the Hungarian synodic tradition.
