This article explores the consequences that Maximos the Confessor drew from experience
of the failure and rejection of his dyoenergist Christology at the Synod of Cyprus (636). His
conviction of the superiority of the knowledge, perception and experience gained in monasticism
led to a breach with the synodal decisions in force. The resultant claim for ascetical
authority had dramatic consequences. These included (1) the consigning to oblivion of the
Synod of Cyprus, (2) the suppression of the protocols of the Synods of Constantinople of
636/7 and 639, (3) the utilization of the Lateran Synod, and (4) the attempt both to disempower
imperial authority in church affairs and to promote papal claims by Maximos and
his supporters.
