On 24 January 1076, 26 bishops, summoned by king Henry IV, assembled at Worms and
withdrew their obedience from Pope Gregory VII. The author presents a new textual witness
for the bishops’ letter to the pope in a manuscript of the canonry Saint Nicolas of Passau.
It is part of a small pro-royal dossier copied on or shortly after the day of the council. It
also transmits one of the two letters addressed to the pope by Henry IV and a letter of Gregory
VII communicating the canons of the Lateran synod of February 1075 to the archbishop
of Magdeburg, available also at Worms and apparently discussed by the participants. A commented
edition of the bishops’ letter is established.
