This paper explores the role played by the monks at the Council of Pisa in 1135. The first
part analyzes their participation in numerical terms (how many among the council fathers
came from the world of monasteries, both as abbots major and as bishops originating from
the experience of cloister); the second part examines the content of the canons relating to
monastic life, such as the payment of tithes and the nullity of marriages contracted by clerics
and monks; in the third, the role played by the monks in the drafting of the canons and their
subsequent implementation. This paper can provide a contribution to the study of the relationship
between episcopate and monasteries in the twelfth century from the perspective
of canonical-conciliar legislation.
