The essay examines three aspects of the relationship between monks and regular clergy and
the two hundred and eighty-one provincial councils celebrated in eighty-three Catholic
provinces worldwide between 1517 and 1817. The first point of the article concentrates on
abbots and monastic superiors as members of the councils; in the second, monks and regulars
have been protagonist in the drafting process of final decisions in the preparatory phase
or during the work of the councils; in the third and last point, some cases of synodal decisions
are presented, disciplining religious orders or monastic life, when regulars were responsible
for parishes, and reducing decisions on the exemptions of the regulars, decrees
then corrected by the Congregation of the Council.
