In general, questions of entry into and exit from monasteries, as well as those regulating a
transfer to another community, are among the topics rarely dealt with at councils. A
significant part of the relevant canons was devoted to setting norms that those who wished
to enter a monastery had to meet: This mainly concerned the age of aspirants and the
treatment of their property. In addition, councils made decisions already at an early stage
about the length of a probationary period or at least set deadlines to be met before taking
final vows. Less attention was paid to questions of leaving monasteries. If one surveys the
relevant decisions, it becomes clear that questions of the organization of entry and exit
clearly outweigh provisions on content.
