Various religious orders (monastic, canons regular, mendicant, and hospitaller) were pressured
to attend either the Council of Pisa-Milan-Asti-Lyon (1511-12) or its rival the Fifth
Lateran Council (1512-17). A number of royal monasteries and orders with headquarters
in France sent representatives to the Pisan Council in response to the command of King
Louis XII. Monastic orders with headquarters in Italy and the mendicant orders adhered to
the papal Lateran Council and worked to defeat the Pisan Council. In gratitude for their
service, Leo X preserved most of their exemptions, the abolition or reduction of which the
bishops at the Lateran Council had demanded.
