Weitere Informationen

John of Toulouse (1590–1659), chronicler and historiographer of the abbey of St Victor, wrote from 1615 until shortly before his death a Latin work in which he, starting with the abbey‘s foundation, collected extensive prosopographic informatoin on the clerics and converse monks of the medieval and early modern abbey.
Part 1 deals with the abbots of the house, whereas part 2 lists all members of St Victor for the period of the 12th and 13th centuries in the form of transcriptions from the obituary of the Victorines. The third and largest part records from around 1303 the clerics of St Victor up to the dissolution of the abbey in 1790, whereas these data had been supplemented by different canons. Finally, part 4 contains a short French summary by a confrère on certain peculiarities of the abbey.
The work John of Toulouse himself named Commentaria rerum pene omnium in domo nostra Victorina is extant in one single MS only and is now at the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris. This work offers a profound insight into the life and works of the Canons Regular of St Augustine of the abbey of St Victor from its foundation to its dissolution.
